A musician advertising their music as a throwback to an era of early 1900s music that no longer exists. Does Jeremy Mohney do this era justice?

Jeremy Mohney & His Orchestra is a throwback album to the big band jazz swing music that was found between the 1930s to the 1950s era of American music. 

This album immediately hits you with that vintage sound of big band swing from the 1900s; in fact, some of the songs could easily be mistaken for the time period and eerily sound familiar to the jazz music that Harry Connick Jr is known for. If you’re looking for something that sounds new in the genre, you will not find that here; however, you will find a nice little throwback to that earlier style of American music. 

This album by Jeremy Mohney greatly suffers from primarily being an instrumental soundtrack with very little vocals; in fact, the majority of vocals are on the opening track and “If I Never Knew You.” What’s crazy is that Jeremy Mohney’s voice is perfect for the genre and that’s evident by the track “If I Never Knew You.”  This track showcases how his voice could easily have enhanced the album; even enhancing future projects. Why Jeremy didn’t use his voice more is a question I wish I knew the answer to.

My final criticism of this project comes down to the sections and melodies. Though this album is a nice throwback to that older American sound, it feels as if it’s missing elements of instrument sections that would make it feel more grand or energetic. Perhaps Jeremy Mohney couldn’t find other instrumentalists to showcase their ability on this project? It’s almost as if the melodies are like a diet version of big band swing; which isn’t bad as I prefer diet soda.

Jeremy Mohney & His Orchestra is a great way for the modern listener to discover the world of big band swing; even if it isn’t as great as the records of yesteryear. Jeremy’s voice was truly meant for this genre and I wish he would showcase his voice more as it only enhances the music even more than without it. Jeremy Mohney is truly a modern artist that understands the music of yesteryear and has a talent for it, but could be even better.
