Michael Jackson‘s bold, defiant solo project in an attempt to establish himself as a soloist, away from the Jackson 5. How does Michael Jackson’s debut album fare away from his music family?

Off The Wall is an ode and commemoration to an era of the 70’s that saw disco come into mainstream popularity on American airwaves. This is not just a solo effort by the late King of Pop, but it is the best elements of the disco era of music on vinyl record.

Off The Wall will get you dancing with its progressive instrumentation from the opening track to the very closing track. Even when you think you’ve run out of energy to dance, songs like ”Workin’ Day and Night” will restimulate your energy and get you back up and grooving.  

Michael Jackson doesn’t fail to hit a single note in any track; almost as if he’s a perfect angel when singing. The first half of this album is so near perfect, that it even reflects in the catchiness of the hooks! Phrases such as “I Wanna Rock With You All Night” become an immediate ear worm with the way Michael perfectly harmonizes his voice. Though Michael‘s song writing is not poetical or deep on this album, that’s the point, it’s a disco fever album! The point is to be catchy and just have fun; and if you’re looking for deep philosophical wordings here, leave your brain at home and put your party pants on.

This album might be strong from the get go, with every song feeling nearly perfect for this album; however, it immediately begins to lose track of what it is halfway through. Though “She’s Out of My Life” is a beautiful, self revealing song, it’s very out of place on this album when you realize that every song has been a disco-motown party fest. The second half of this album sorta feels like rejects that were supposed to be scrapped, but were still added to the album. They’re not bad songs, but they make no sense when you see that Michael was going with a very specific theme from the get go. Honestly, Michael should have kept the first few songs and have the album end with “She’s Out of My Life” to make it a perfect album.

Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall will get you dancing, no matter what age; however, just when you want to dance even more, the album takes an odd turn in direction that will leave you confused.
